Feed prices in the aquaculture industry are largely affected by fish and soy meal prices which were influence by a surge in commodity prices in 2008. Moreover, feed costs in aquaculture are dependent on the catch of anchovies and other “bony” fish that are destined for the production of fish meal and landings in these fisheries have been low as prices for raw materials have sky rocketed. Additionally, feed demand and aquaculture growth have been reflective of each other in past years; thus as the aquaculture industry expands feed demand increases as well. When compared to Urner Barry’s Index for white farmed shrimp and fresh farmed salmon, the percent change of the latter shows a very high statistical correlation, while the white shrimp index shows more of a lagging indicator. Yet, since fish meal is an integral part of feed for both the production of shrimp and salmon, it is essential to follow the behavior of this price, however it should be noted that while fishmeal prices and other factors can affect market prices, the fundamentals of supply and demand will always be the best indicator of market pricing. The number of Syrians who have lost or fled their homes since the deadly fighting gripped their country in March 2011 is growing rapidly.
